Impact of Immigration Policy on Integration To what extent will recent and proposed changes to the immigration system assist in successful integration of new immigrants? Over the past 12 months, UK Immigration has seen a metamorphic transition, which reflects the gripping need that has been felt for legislative change. The new Immigration Rules are now in full swing, some of which have already hit the front line and others that are still presently under construction. It is inevitable that any system that is introduced for the first time will either be very beneficial in the successful integration of new immigrants or will have devastating consequences. Following the Australia and Canada model, the most revolutionary change in the legal process is the introduction of the Points Based System (hereafter referred to as PBS) for new immigrants seeking to work, train or study in the UK It replaces the approximate 80 routes of doing either of the above under the present regime. These short term or long term Immigration categories have been streamlined into one single immigration system. The PBS is classified under tiers and sets out clearly how an immigrant can successfully meet the criteria for admission through each of the various ways. The benefit of adopting the single system provides clarity in the law and secures a carefully controlled integration of new immigrants. The new system is much more simple in form and straightforward in application. The advantage that new immigrants will have will be that they will be able to ascertain whether they meet the necessary criteria for a particular visa, which will save them time and prevent wastage of costs. Looking at the new system in more depth, the PBS is divided into 5 Tiers. Tiers 1 (General) was introduced on 29th February 2008 and took effect from 30th June 2008.[1]. Tiers 2 5 have been in force since 27th November 2008. Tier 3 has been temporarily suspended and Tier 4, which applies to students aims to be incorporated by March 2009. Under each Tier, any prospective immigrant would need to score points in order to attain entry clearance, The points have been set by an independent body referred to as the Migration Advisory Committee. Instrumental to the PBS is the involvement of sponsorship[2]. Another change for new immigrants to consider is the requirement of the entry clearance and the knowledge of the English Language as a prerequisite. The objective of Tier 1, which came into force in February 2008 is aimed at, Highly Skilled Workers (hereafter referred to as HSW) and the Post Study Work (PSW) schemes, which replaces the former Highly Skilled Migrant Programme, (HSMP) the International Graduates Scheme, (IGS) The Fresh Talent Working in Scotland Scheme and the rules for business-people and innovators, investors, writers, composers and artists[3]. This Tier has been formed in line with bringing in the, â€Å"brightest and the best†[4]. On the face of it, the law appears to be complicated but the writer suggests that upon close examination, this is not the case. Instead, this is good news for some workers, particularly those that do wish to enter on the PSW. The PSW allows a new worker to remain in the country for a period of 2 years and will benefit from good quality training. The original IGS scheme lacked consistency as employers were reluctant to invest in resource training of new recruits who were required to leave the country after 12 months. Eventhough the visa does not constitute a settlement visa, a new immigrant will still be able enter into long term agreements such as leases for accommodation purposes. The process under the old HSMP scheme and the new HSW scheme is very different. A new immigrant must score a number of points in relation to each item. The criteria for awarding points are given on a sliding scale against requirements of a degree qualification, whether the new immigrant has studied in the UK and if the prospective applicant is applying under the Scheme from within our outside of the UK. The new immigrant needs a score of 75 points or more in order to qualify on the scheme and additional 10 points for the knowledge of English. There is also requirement for those that apply outside the UK; that they must have a bank balance of  £2,800 and those within the UK must have  £800. The purpose is to ensure that the new immigrant is able to support him/herself up until the first salary is received and not be dependant upon Government resources. This minimum financial requirement may appear to be a hindrance for those who are residing outside the UK. It means that there may be a section of society who are highly qualified but do not have the financial standing and therefore are excluded from meeting the criteria. Tier 1 and the new law has already been brought into question where the case of foreign Doctors are concerned. In the BAPIO[5] case, the House of Lords delivered judgement solely on the issue of lawfulness of the Department of Health Guidance. It was held that the guidance defeated a legitimate expectation held by Doctors in training on the previous HSMP that they would not be prevented from undertaking work. Tier 1 (General) states that a doctor will not be able to undertake employment as a doctor in training up until entry clearance is granted. This is therefore, another procedural obstacle for a UK Immigrant. Tier 2 applies to skilled workers with a job offer and has been in existence since November 2008. This Tier replaces the concept of work permits completely which were traditionally created via a 2 stage process. (an approval letter was required prior to applying for a visa) It must be noted that the notion of the name work permit has been completed phased out since legislation that was passed in 2007[6] The aim of the Tier is to help the UK Labour market. All prospective immigrants need entry clearance and there will be no work permit or visa but a single decision made by the UK Border Agency. To qualify, a skilled foreign worker will have to obtain 50[7] points under the system and this will depend upon factors such as the person already being in skilled work and speaks a good standard English (save for those that are intra-company transferees and stay in the UK for less than 2 years) as well as having an earning capacity of  £24,000 or having a recognised qualification. One way for an immigrant to earn 50 points immediately will be if the employer in the UK can show that they cannot fill the required skilled post with a British worker and that the job vacancy has been advertised in the UK. This leads onto the employer passing the Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT) which refers to the job being in shortage occupation. The rules are extremely detailed and there are four sub categories under the Tier 2[8]. However, it would be worth mentioning those specified occupations, which were previously under this Tier but have now will be excluded as per the new law. The Tier does not include overseas qualified nurses and midwifes, ground staff of overseas owned airlines, exchange teachers, and language assistants The list goes on. The writer considers these occupations to be a wide range of professionals in the cross section of society, which does not help with the integration of new immigrants with these qualifications. There is a recent case of R(on the application of HSMP Forum Ltd v SSHD[9] the Judge in this case has raised a concern with the new law regarding highly skilled migrants. The Judge has found that upon applying the new rules, there is a breach of legitimate expectation for those immigrants who have already obtained entry clearance because the immigrant will have not secured work associated with their skills and ability and that there will be an element of racial discrimination. . The Home Office has had to act fast following this Judgement and consequently, have issued a policy to incorporate the judgement. The previous rules (prior to November 2006) will apply to those UK immigrants who have been adversely affected by the change in law. This is good news for those immigrants that fall under this category. Alongside Tier 2 is the requirement of the certificate of sponsorship which has to be issued to the prospective employer. Prior to this, the Company will have to firstly be registered with the UK Border Agency so that it can obtain a sponsorship license. Additionally, the procedural requirements for a company would be to demonstrate that it has effective HR systems in place to manage its workforce. The writer is of the view that skilled workers will be discouraged from coming to the UK because the law is incredibly water tight. Additionally, if an organisation is called into question, if faces losing its license and any immigrant working would be required to leave the country within a period of 28 or 60 days. The law goes even further as from the 29th February 2008, which states that if a Company knowingly employs an individual who is not legitimately working, it faces prosecution and fine of up to  £10,000 and any businesses that do the same face an unlimited fine or imprisonment. The procedure of carrying out this process is set to cause serious delay to the recruitment of key immigrants and employers will risk losing access to a pool of talent on an international level. Tier 4, which applies to students is set to come into force in March 2009. From July 2008, colleges and universities have been open to apply to the UK Border Agency to become registered sponsors. Under the Tier, only those overseas adults with a proven track record in studying will be permitted to apply and the student concerned will have to enrol on an English course. They will also have to pass a maintenance test and produce supporting documents such as educational qualifications. The long term plan for Autumn 2009 is the emergence of the an IT system to support the student visa route. It appears that the student visa rules are similar to old ones save for the fact that the new visa rules will only apply to overseas ‘adults’; whether this will cut out a section of new immigrants is yet to be known. Finally, Tier 5 applies to Youth Mobility and temporary workers. Tier 5 of the PBS is currently in existence where temporarily workers wish to come to the UK for primarily non-economic reasons, such as sportspeople and charity workers. The new law still dictates that the new UK Immigrant is awarded 30 points and savings of at least  £800. This again may be difficult for some workers who only essentially work on a ’temporary’ basis. Those that wish to come to the UK as an entertainer will still be will be assessed outside of the PBS under visitor visa rules. The Government is due to publish details of the new visitor visa category in the near future. There will be some aspects of the law which will create successful integration as the new law creates transparency and clarity. The fact is that the actual criteria to meet has not considerably changed but what has reformed is the legal process. This will have a negative affect on those immigrants that will want to appeal against the decisions and the Asylum Immigration Tribunal (AIT) may be faced with a number of claims. The Government has produced a consultation paper[10], which proposes to change the process of Immigration and Asylum appeals. There will be an additional hurdle to cross if the scope for Judicial Review is revised; which will have the prevent the applicant’s right to appeal to the High Court, following a decision of the AIT. To conclude, the recent law has potential implications and has the possibility of deterring new immigrants from applying and discriminate against particularly highly skilled individuals who hold the qualifications but not the job to go with it or those that simply will not have the financial standing . The new law regarding the integration of immigrants is to some extent a cause for concern as the law has already been under question and has subsequently been ’tweaked’ in its initial stages. We all know what SOOT stands for in the business world. There are the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. In a business the management leaders need to be aware of the surroundings for any ideas that may come their way and to be developed and planned out to make a profit and to hold the stakeholders to help make a difference. Apple is in the design, marketing, and development of personal computers and software. Apple is also into digital music players, network solutions, and related accessories (King, 2009).In researching the Apple Corporation, they have a very long history and although they had many changes from when they first started working out of a garage as a bobby they have definitely come a long way. Strengths First of all their strength Is In their technology. They have low debt and brand loyalty, they collaborated with Intel Computers in 2006, and they have a Strong Research & Development Department. Everything in this category is good because it is strong and assures for a good future. Weaknesses Their weaknesses are more compelling than one might think.They are weak in relationship with Intel and Microsoft, a weak presence in the business arena, a weak presence in markets other than education and publishing, and a slow turn around on high demand products. This does not look good for any business. The reasoning behind this category is If they do not make a turnaround, they are going to lose more customers and their sales will go down and their future will look bleak. Opportunities Their opportunities are their online sales of computers are Increasing with rapid speed; Apple Computers should focus to develop new models to cater to the need of customers.Their downloaded music for MPH players Is very marketable. That means more money for them and their colleagues. Threats Now Tort tenet tenants, ten apple steward Ana tenet cell phones are very expensive compared to other companies. The competition is strong and Apple does not look like the y will catch up to them in the laptop division. Conclusion This paper has shown that the research about Apple Inc. With a SOOT analysis and pros and cons are more likely to happen if management is not sure of a plan. This paper also introduced a new market in a mini computer. Strat egic planning is a source of having the right tools and the right people to make new marketing ideas work for the company. Making the right choice of vendors will save time and money for going global.

For something chronic – say, a genetic disease like Sandovsky's – continual healings are required. Otherwise it will keep coming back. That's what would happen to me. I need you, Vasilisa. I need you to help me fight this and keep it away. So I can live.† â€Å"That still doesn't explain why you took me,† she argued. â€Å"I would have helped you if you'd asked.† â€Å"They never would have let you do it. The school. The council. It's part of you. You resisted the animals, but you didn't think twice about helping Rose. You can't even help compulsion – which spirit also gives you special strength in. And that's how it will always be. You can't avoid spirit. Better to stay here, in isolation, away from further sources of stress. You'd either have become increasingly unstable at the Academy, or they would have put you on some pill that would have made you feel better but stunted your power.† A calm core of confidence settled inside her, one very different from what I'd observed over the last couple of years. â€Å"I love you, Uncle Victor, but I'm the one who has to deal with that and decide what to do. If I were cured†¦if I were cured, I could take my rightful place†¦Ã¢â‚¬  His words triggered something inside of Lissa, a sudden consideration for the state of the Moroi. She'd never contemplated what he'd said, about how different it might be if Moroi and their guardians fought side by side to rid the world of the Strigoi and their evil. It reminded her of Christian and what he'd said about using magic as a weapon too. But even if she did appreciate Victor's convictions, neither of us thought it was worth what he wanted her to do. â€Å"I'm sorry,† she whispered. â€Å"I'm sorry for you. But please don't make me do this.† â€Å"I have to.† She looked him straight in the eye. â€Å"I won't do it.† He inclined his head, and someone stepped forward from the corner. Another Moroi. No one I knew. Walking around behind Lissa, he untied her hands. â€Å"This is Kenneth.† Victor held his hands out toward her free ones. â€Å"Please, Vasilisa. Take my hands. Send the magic through me just as you did with Rose.† She shook her head. â€Å"No.† His voice was less kindly when he spoke again. â€Å"Please. One way or another, you will heal me. I'd rather it be on your terms, not ours.† She shook her head again. He made a slight gesture toward Kenneth. And that's when the pain started. Lissa screamed. I screamed. In the SUV, Dimitri's grip on the wheel jerked in surprise, making us veer. Casting me an alarmed look, he started to pull over. â€Å"No, no! Keep going!† I pressed my palms to my temples. â€Å"We have to get there!† From behind my seat, Alberta reached forward and rested a hand on my shoulder. â€Å"Rose, what's happening?† I blinked back tears. â€Å"They're torturing her†¦with air. This guy†¦Kenneth†¦he's making it press against her†¦into her head. The pressure's insane. It feels like my – her – skull's gonna explode.† I started sobbing. Dimitri looked at me out of the corner of his eye and pressed the gas pedal down harder. Kenneth didn't stop with just the physical force of air. He also used it to affect her breathing. Sometimes he'd smother her with it; other times he'd take it all away and leave her gasping. After enduring all that firsthand – and it was bad enough secondhand – I felt pretty confident I would have done anything they wanted. And finally, she did. Hurting and bleary-eyed, Lissa took Victor's hands. I'd never been in her head when she worked magic and didn't know what to expect. At first, I felt nothing. Just a sense of concentration. Lissa summoned up all of those things, as many as she could, and sent them into Victor. The magic flowed through both of us, brilliant and sweet. It was alive. It was her life. And as wonderful as it all felt, she was growing weaker and weaker. But as all of those elements – bound by the mysterious spirit element – flowed into Victor, he grew stronger and stronger. The change was startling. His skin smoothed, no longer wrinkled and pocked. The gray thinning hair filled out, turning dark and lustrous once more. The green eyes – still jadelike – sparkled again, turning alert and lively. He'd become the Victor she remembered from her childhood. Exhausted, Lissa passed out. In the SUV, I tried to relate what was happening. Dimitri's face grew darker and darker, and he spat out a string of Russian swear words he still hadn't taught me the meanings of. When we were a quarter mile from the cabin, Alberta made a call on her cell phone, and our whole convoy pulled over. All of the guardians – more than a dozen-got out and stood huddled, planning strategy. Someone went ahead to scout and returned with a report on the number of people inside and outside of the cabin. When the group seemed ready to disperse, I started to get out of the car. Dimitri stopped me. â€Å"No, Roza. You stay here.† â€Å"The hell with that. I have to go help her.† He cupped my chin with his hands, fixing me with his eyes. â€Å"You have helped her. Your job is done. You did it well. But this isn't any place for you. She and I both need you to stay safe.† Only the realization that arguing would delay the rescue kept me quiet. Swallowing back any protests, I nodded. He nodded back and joined the others. All of them slipped off into the woods, blending with the trees. Sighing, I kicked the passenger seat back and lay down. I was so tired. Even though the sun poured through the windshield, it was night for me. I'd been up for most of it, and a lot had happened in that time. Between the adrenaline of my own role and sharing Lissa's pain, I could have passed out just like she had. Except that she was awake now. Slowly, her perceptions dominated mine once more. She lay on a couch in the cabin. One of Victor's henchmen must have carried her there after she'd fainted. Victor himself – alive and well now, thanks to his abuse of her – stood in the kitchen with the others as they all spoke in low voices about their plans. Only one stood near Lissa, keeping watch. He'd be easy to take down when Dimitri and the Badass Team burst inside. Lissa studied the lone guardian and then glanced at a window beside the couch. Still dizzy from the healing, she managed to sit up. The guardian turned around, watching her warily. She met his eyes and smiled. â€Å"You're going to stay quiet no matter what I do,† she told him. â€Å"You aren't going to call for help or tell anyone when I leave. Okay?† The thrall of compulsion slid over him. He nodded in agreement. Moving toward the window, she unlocked it and slid the glass up. As she did, a tumble of considerations played through her mind. She was weak. She didn't know how far from the Academy – from anything, really – she was. She had no clue how far she could get before someone noticed. But she also knew she might not get another chance at escape. She had no intention of spending the rest of her life in this cabin in the woods. At any other time, I would have cheered on her boldness, but not this time. Not when all those guardians were about to save her. She needed to stay put. Unfortunately, she couldn't hear my advice. Lissa climbed out the window, and I swore out loud. â€Å"What? What'd you see?† asked a voice behind me. I jerked up from my reclining position in the car, banging my head on the ceiling. Glancing behind me, I found Christian peering up from the cargo space behind the farthest backseats. â€Å"What are you doing here?† I asked. â€Å"What's it look like? I'm a stowaway.† â€Å"Don't you have a concussion or something?† He shrugged like it didn't matter. What a great pair he and Lissa were. Neither afraid to take on crazy feats while seriously injured. Still, if Kirova had made me stay behind, I would have been right beside him in the back. â€Å"What's happening?† he asked. â€Å"Did you see something new? Hastily, I told him. I also got out of the car as I spoke. He followed. â€Å"She doesn't know our guys are already coming for her. I'm going to go get her before she kills herself with exhaustion.† â€Å"What about the guardians? The school's, I mean. Are you going to tell them she's gone?† I shook my head. â€Å"They're probably already busting down the cabin's door. I'm going after her.† She was somewhere off to the right side of the cabin. I could head in that direction but wouldn't be able to get very precise until I was much closer to her. Still, it didn't matter. I had to find her. Seeing Christian's face, I couldn't resist giving him a dry smile. â€Å"And yeah, I know. You're going with me.†

Edited American English is a variety of Standard American English used in most forms of  academic writing. It is also called Standard Written English (SWE). Edited English commonly refers to writing that has been prepared for publication in print (in contrast to online writing). The Brown University Corpus of Edited American English (BUC) contains approximately one million words of present-day edited American English. Excluded from this corpus are any forms of spoken English as well as words found in verse, drama, and scientific writing. Commentary Edited American English is the version of our language that has come to be the standard for written public discourse—for newspapers and books and for most of the writing you do in school and on the job... Where did this description of Edited American English come from? It is the work through the years of many grammarians, many authors of textbooks and dictionaries, many editors who have taken it upon themselves to describe—and sometimes to prescribe—the version of English used by the influential writers and speakers of their day. Further, these same conservative American standards insist that when kind, manner, sort, type, way, and the like are plural, then the preceding demonstratives and any count nouns serving as objects of the following prepositions must also be plural: these kinds of studies, those sorts of poems, these types of airplanes. But when the following objects of the preposition are mass nouns, they may be singular, as in those sorts of gravel, those types of sand, these ways of thinking.
